What’s the point of Bizarro Crazy Runway Designs?

Got a great question from Katherine after the Project Runway email:

"Speaking of runways. When we happen to see the skinny models, modelling those what I call outrageous creations, I think to myself "where would you wear those clothes to"?

Couldn't wear them to work or casual, can you?   :-)"

That's actually a great question and I have wondered that myself, especially when you see some things that are just completely ridiculous.

And on the functional side things...

Unless you have a live-in maid just to clean your crazy runway wear and to dress you as well, it will seem like that type of clothing doesn't really have a purpose right?

But once you check out the business side of things, it does.

Crazy garments aren't to be bought by the Buyer or the end customer.

They're made to evoke emotion and to solidify their branding. They're meant to show you how amazing the abilities of this brand are and to pull out the die hard fans from the crowd.

Raving fans make great evangelists and word of mouth is free advertising.

And if you're being talked about it's a lot harder to fade into the background. Now you're a popular brand and people just can't get enough of your outrageous designs!!

Anywho, the outrageous stuff is also meant to completely flesh out a theme or creative spurt in order to connect a strong visual with the watered down version that actually ends up being for sale.

Just like in the auto industry, the concept cars help push the initiative of the company and direct the creativity of their brand.

But can you actually purchase the concept cars? No...

Would that car be feasible to mass produce and still hit the price point for the end consumer? Hell NO!

Sorry I got excited...

But it gets everyone to dream and it gives them a more defined concept to design the mass market version toward.

And it's the same with clothing.

Make sense?

I hope so 🙂

So what kind of outrageous designs can you come up with to have everyone gasping at your creative genius and talking about how well sewn (and extravagantly ridiculous) your pieces are?

What? You still need help making a basic block?

Ok I understand, and I think I have a solution for you:
